Climbing the world’s Seven Summits, the highest peak on each continent, has become one of the most sought after achievements of mountaineers around the world. The challenge was first defined by Dick Bass and Frank Wells in their now legendary book, Seven Summits. Dick Bass eventually succeeded in completing the challenge when he summitted Everest on April 30, 1985.

Since then mountaineers around the world have taken up the challenge, which has not been without controversy. At issue is the definition of the seventh continent. By normal geographic definitions, Australia is a continent and therefore Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on that continent. However, some consider Australasia or Oceania to be a continent and on that basis, climb Carstenz Pyramid, which is located in Indonesia.

As a result both versions of the seven summits are recognized and statistics are maintained for both achievements. The list of the seven (eight) summits is as follows:
